How to sing: a regular lesson in vocal from Elizaveta Bokova

A singer who has not prepared his vocal cords for certain stresses arising in the process of performing some difficult pieces of the work, just like an athlete who has not done the warm-up, may be injured and lose the opportunity to continue his activity.

People who want to learn how to perform high-quality vocal works, want to learn how to properly sing in order to warm up the voice. A good lesson in this regard is Elizaveta Bokova’s video lesson, in which she offers six singing exercises with the gradual complication of vocal parts, and also explains some of the nuances regarding proper singing breathing and picking. The lessons are suitable for both experienced and beginner vocalists.

What is common to any singing?

All exercises can be combined in one guiding principle. It lies in the fact that a key is chosen for singing, the main tone of which corresponds to the lower limit of your vocal range, after which, starting with this sound, the scoring part is played, which is repeated half a tone higher each time, making an upward movement (until it reaches the upper limit ), and then down the chromatic scale.

Roughly speaking, the exercises are sung like this: we start at the bottom and repeat the same thing (the same tune) higher and higher, and then we go down again.

In addition, the content of each subsequent batch requires a higher technique of execution. And in order to achieve efficiency, performing exercises that prepare you to sing, you need to take into account several factors that contribute to success, including:

  • proper breathing;
  • the corresponding formulation of the singing apparatus, that is, those organs that are involved in the sound production;
  • a certain direction of the sound stream;
  • strict adherence to the recommendations for each individual exercise.

Recommendations for proper breathing

One of the recommendations on how to sing properly, refers to the breathing pattern, which is carried out only by the stomach. It is important to ensure that the shoulders and chest did not move, and there was no tension in the muscles of the neck. Breathe should be very calm, relaxed, almost invisible to others, and remove the vowels without thinking, as soon as possible getting rid of the sound and not holding anything in yourself.

First readout: sing with your mouth closed

In the first exercise, the author of the video lesson advises to sing with a closed mouth using the sound "hmm ...", raising it by half a tone with each subsequent extraction, while it is important that the teeth are unclenched, and the sound itself is directed to the lips.

By singing a few notes in this way, you can continue the exercise with your mouth open, using the sounds of "mi", "me", "ma", "mo", "mu" in turn, and having reached the extreme heights, gradually return to the initial tone .

The next stage of this exercise is to reproduce the sequence of "ma-me-m-m-moo" in one breath, without changing the pitch, after which the order of the vowels is changed and the part is played in the sequence "m-me-ma-mom".

Vocal axiom. With proper singing, all sounds are sent to the same place, and the location of the speech organs during singing is somewhat reminiscent of a situation where hot potatoes are in the mouth.

The second one: let's play on the lips

The second exercise, which is practiced for singing by masters of the technique of virtuoso singing "bel canto", is very useful for developing singing breathing and achieving the necessary directionality of sound. It will also help to ensure the correctness of breathing, the criterion for evaluation of which is the continuity of the sound of the voice.

The articulation used in this case is reminiscent of how a small child imitates the sound of a car. Extraction of sound occurs through the mouth with closed, but relaxed lips. In this exercise, the singing of sounds is carried out in a major triad, rising up and returning to the initial tone.

The third and the fourth one: glissando

The third exercise is the same as the second, only the vocal part is performed by receiving glissando (slip), that is, when playing, it’s not three separate notes that are played, but one that gradually rises to the upper tone, and then, without interruption, returns to the starting position .

It is better to start the fourth exercise performed by the glissando technique with the notes "mi" or "re" of the second octave. Its essence is to sing in the nose, preventing air from escaping from the throat. At the same time the mouth should be open, but the sound is still sent to the nose. Each phrase includes three sounds, which, starting from the top, only decrease in tone from each other.

Fifth way: v'eni, blame, blame ???

The fifth exercise will help to even better learn how to sing correctly and effectively, as well as prepare your breath for the execution of long phrases. The party consists in the reproduction of the Italian word "Vieni" (that is, "where"), but with different vowels and sounds like: "Viñi", "Vieni", "Viñani".

Such a sequence of vowels is constructed depending on the difficulty of achieving the voicing of their reproduction. Each element of the exercise is based on the five sounds of the major scale and begins to be performed from the eighth tone, dropping down, and its rhythmic pattern is much more complicated than in previous exercises. Reproduction takes the form "vie-vie-vie-uh-uh-ni", where the first three syllables are played on the same note, and the remaining sounds descend along the steps of the above-mentioned scale, with the vowels "... uh-uh ..." performed by legato.

When performing this part, it is important to sing all three phrases in the same breath and open your mouth so that the sound spreads in a vertical plane, and you can check the correctness of the articulation by pressing your index fingers on your cheeks while extracting the sound. If the jaws are diluted enough, the fingers will fall freely between them.

Sixth - Stacatto

The sixth exercise is performed by taking staccato, that is, steep notes. This creates the impression that the sound shoots into the head, which is somewhat similar to laughter. For the exercise, the syllable "le" is used, which, when played, takes the form of a series of steep sounds, "Leo-oh-oh-oh-oh ..." performed by double quint steps with a gradual decrease in half a tone. At the same time so that there is no understatement of sounds, it is important to imagine that the movement is going up.

Of course, to learn to properly perform vocals, it may not be enough just to read about how to sing properly, but the above information, combined with the material presented in the video, can enrich the practical exercises and help achieve impressive results.
